ROYAL NAVY'S EXPERIENCE OF ROLLS ROYCE "OLYMPUS" AND "TYNE" MAIN PROPULSION GAS TURBINES
Several Royal Navy ships are at sea with all gas turbines main propulsion systems using the Rolls Royce Olympus and Tyne gas turbines. The Royal Navy's experience with these engines and the extent to which development trials have eliminated design shortcomings are considered. Some of the logistic support arrangements for the engines are described, in the context of the Navy's special requirements and the degree to which engine health monitoring can obviate the need for a declared overhaul life is also considered.
