A comparative study is made of the mechanical properties of new construction materials, such as standard concrete, glass-fibre reinforced lightweight concrete, concrete reinforced with steel fibres, polymer-impregnated concrete, and glass-fibre reinforced laminated polyesters from the point of view of bridge construction. Mention is made of the possible applications of these materials, and attention is drawn to the use of glass-fibre reinforced polymers in the construction of a bridge consisting of a closed tube, and in solving problems of noise, pollution and weather. /TRRL/
