PEDESTRIANS: HIGH ACCIDENT-RISK GROUP
PIETONS: GROUPE A HAUT RISQUE D'ACCIDENT
The author examines the problem of pedestrian safety and stresses the fact that it has been underestimated by the authorities in spite of the very large number of casualties each year (approximately 11000). This article is in three parts: (1) analysis of statistical accident data; (2) current studies of the personal characteristics of pedestrians and road network problems; (3) measurement of risk exposure. The quantitative criteria taken into consideration are the overall time spent in the streets and the number of streets crossed. The aim of the study is to investigate the possible influence of different risk exposure on the differential accident rates observed. The first stage of the investigation dealt with a sample of children between 6 and 12 years old in a suburb of Bruxelles. /TRRL/
