PILING TECHNIQUES

This article gives an outline of the purposes of piling and its history, followed by a comprehensive account of methods of piling currently in use with examples of types made by the different manufacturers. Bored cast-in-place piles are first dealt with in which soil is removed from the hole, which is then filled with concrete. Particular reference is made to the methods employed by the expanded piling co, the cementation piling and foundations ltd, lind piling, lilley-waddington ltd (who employ the waddington-benoto piling system), gkn keller foundations (who use hydraulic auger rigs) and colets earth boring ltd. An outline is also given of dowsett prepakt piles that use a high-strength intrusion mortar instead of concrete. Driven cast-in-place piles are next described which differ in that a casing is employed that is removed as casting takes place. Particular techniques described are those employed by the simplex piling ltd, gkn keller foundations (who vibrate the casing during withdrawal to increase bonding), and the franki in situ process which creates a bulb at the base and protuberances along its length. This is followed by an account of partially preformed piles in which a part of the member is driven in the ground and then completed by placing concrete or grout either inside or outside it. Examples described are the west's shell piling system, west's segmental pile, bsp international foundations ltd's cased pile, a similar method used by raymond international (UK) ltd, standard prestcore piles and the long element pile. Steel preformed piling systems described include universal bearing piles, frodingham box piles, rendhex piles, unissen and frodingham high modulus piles and larssen box piles. Concrete preformed piles described include those made by dow-mac concrete ltd, the herkules piling system used by A. Johnson construction co, west's hardrive pile and balken piling ltd segmental piles. Reference is made to special pile-drivers and the article concludes with a comprehensive bibliography. /TRRL/
