RECENT TRENDS IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT MATERIALS. SHORT- AND MEDIUM-TERM PERSPECTIVES
EVOLUTION RECENTE DES MATERIAUX DES CHAUSSEES SOUPLES PERSPECTIVES A COURT ET MOYEN TERME
The authors examine the evolution in the materials used in the construction of flexible pavements since the publication of articles in the recycling series in 1972. The evolution is caused by increased research activities into the lowering of costs, increase in the price of petroleum products, and greater attention paid to pavement maintenance techniques. (1) the materials stabilized with hydraulic binders for use in roadbases are examined in turn: fine stabilized plastic soil, stabilized sand, gravel-slag, gravel-cement, gravel-ash mixtures; (2) roadbase materials stabilized with bituminous binders: sand-bitumen, gravel-bitumen, gravel emulsion mixtures; and (3) materials for wearing courses (new pavements, strengthening and maintenance). Mention is made of two new techniques for reducing the quantity of bitumen utilized (bitumen-sulphur and bitumen-limestone). /TRRL/
