STABILIZATION OF SAINT-SAULVE SLAG
SCORIES DE SAINT-ANDRE
The Lille laboratory examined the stabilization of slag (or recycled fly-ash) from the thiers (59) power station: with fly-ash and lime with or without adding gypsum, with granulated slag and lime, and with lime. The results show that: since slag grading is coarser than that of the fly-ash, its pozzolanic properties are lower. After a year the scoria-fly ash-lime mixtures reach a compressive strength of 29 and 63 bars when the binder content (lime-fly ash = 20/80) is increased from 20 to 30%. Adding 2% gypsum shortens hardening time especially between 7 and 14 days. In the case of the slag-granulated slag-lime mixtures, strength increases with slag content and also with lime-content. The mixture with 20% slag and 3% lime has the same strength values as the mixture containing 3% slag and 1% lime. In the case of slag stabilized with lime, strength values at one year are double when the lime content is increased from 5 to 10%. All the mixtures show a high resistance to water or frost except the 80% scoria and 20% slag with 1 or 3% lime, for which frost resistance is satisfactory only after 60 days curing. /TRRL/
