A RAIL CROSSING INVENTORY GIS AND DECISION SUPPORT FOR THE NORTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has developed a geographic information system- (GIS)-based decision support system. The system allows for efficient accessing, inventorying, and evaluating of the State's railroad crossings. The rail crossing inventory GIS unifies a diverse number of data types. These data types include ground photography, CADD drawings, USDOT AAR railroad crossing data, orthophotography, global positioning systems (GPS) surveyed crossing locations, city and county boundaries. Avenue scripts were used to develop the user interface in ArcView. ArcInfo was utilized for converting CAD drawings and for registering orthophotography. A customized AAR railroad crossing inventory data entry screen, that was developed using Borland International's Delphi 2.0, is integrated with the GIS. At present, the system holds data for 36 railroad crossings.
