ALKALI-SILICA REACTION-ABSTRACT
Work on the quantitative microanalyses of alkali-silia gel in concrete is reported. A 5 x 10 cm thin section containing a 3 mm triangular partially reacted aggregated particle with cracks filled with isotropic translucent deposits radiating from 3 corners was studied. It was found that the CaO content of these deposits increased as distance in the crack from the reaction site increased. Further work is also reported which attempts to explain the mechanism of the alkali-aggregate reaction on the basis of the Donnan membrane equilibrium.
