ESTABLISHING MARINE BOUNDARIES - A NEW FEDERAL EFFORT

Long-term tide observations are required to compute tidal datums which, in turn, are used to define marine boundaries and seaward extensions. The National Ocean Survey (NOS), the Federal agency responsible for tide observations and predictions, is currently implementing a long-term plan to determine the marine boundaries for 27 coastal states and island possessions. This plan will cost an estimated 140 million dollars and require 20 to 30 years to complete. The steps to be carried out in implementing the plan are outlined.
