VIKING PIPER - THE FIRST OF A NEW GENERATION OF PIPELAYING VESSELS IS CLASSED WITH BUREAU VERITAS

The first of the third generation pipe laying barges, named Viking Piper, is a 167.5 m long semi-submersible designed to lay large diameter pipes in water depths of over 400 m with a significant reduction in down time due to adverse weather conditions. The barge is non-propelled, but positions itself and progresses by a system of fourteen 40,000 pound anchors and winches. A novel feature of the barge is its retractable stern ramp which can be drawn onto the barge. An automatic ballast system compensates for trim and heel variation due to pipe loads, weight dispositions, wind and current loading and crane movements. The design comprises twin floaters supporting an upper pontoon on a total of six columns. The support columns are linked to each other and to the upper pontoon by tubular bracings.
