TOPOCHEMICAL REACTIONS-ABSTRACT

The problem is discussed of why portland cement specimens begin to expand shortly after forming and continue to do so for some period of time. Two investigations are described which have explored the mechanism of initial reaction of cement with water. The sequence of reactions in one investigation seem to support a mechanism outlined here. The results of the other study point out that the explanation that the expansion phenomenon is assocated with topochemical formation is not satisfactory.
