REACTION OF C SUB 3A WITH WATER
The reactions were studied of pastes of C sub 3 A (C equals Calcium; A equals Aluminum 203) without admixture, with gypsum alone, with calcium chloride alone and with a mixture of the two. The C sub 3 A without admixture initially formed C sub 4 A H sub x, which changed to C sub 3 A H sub 6. Addition of calcium chloride resulted in formation of C sub 3 A. calcium chloride. H sub 10 and C sub 4 A H sub 13 or a solid solution of the two. Chloride retarded formation of C sub 3 A H sub 6. Addition of gypsum resulted initially in formation of C sub 3 A. CSH sub 12 with a minor amount of ettringite. With both chloride and gypsum, major products were C sub 3 A. CHSH sub 12 and C and 3 A. calcium chloride H sub 10. However, more ettringite was formed in absence of chloride. Monosulfate was formed in preference to ettringite possibly because crystals of gypsum were larger than those of C sub 3 A, resulting in a slow rate of solution of the gypsum. /Author/
