STUDIES OF PROTECTION METHOD FOR CORROSION ON MANGANESE- BRONZE PROPELLER

Tha Authors describe an investigation of factors affecting the corrosion of manganese-bronze propellers. The investigation included tests of the corrosion behaviour of samples of manganese-bronze in seawater of various degrees of pollution and at different rates of flow. Measurements of the electrical potential differences between hull, propeller shaft, and propeller on actual ships in harbour and in service were also performed. The latter series of tests showed that zinc or aluminium sacrificial anodes tend to lose their effectiveness during service owing to the electrical insulation effect of the oil film between shaft and bearings, which increases with shaft speed. This effect can be overcome by transferring the anodes to the propeller itself, in the form of a zinc or aluminum cap on the hub. Excellent results have been obtained by this means on a number of ships and indicate a useful anode life of about four years. Another protection method is to coat the propeller blades with epoxy resin.
