NEW METHODS IN ICEBREAKING

Following a brief general history of icebreakers and their differing operational roles, research and development in icebreaking technology since 1950 is reviewed. Model testing techniques in use at the icebreaking tank of the HSVA are described. The properties of synthetic ice and natural ice are compared and a description is given of an experimental programme using the cantilever beam of the HSVA tank to determine the relationship between the flexural strength, elasticity, salt content and temperature of salt-water ice. The results are compared with the theoretical work of Assur and Weeks.
