DEVELOPMENT OF SHIP PROPULSION SYSTEM USING ELECTROMAGNETIC GEAR--PARTS 1 AND 2
The paper describes the design and general arrangement of electromagnetic gearing for a marine propulsion system. Characteristics and advantages of such a system are presented. These concern improvement in reduction gear reliability, reversing mechanism and coupling design. A comparison is then drawn between electric and electromagnetic propulsion machinery. Reduction in the volume of machinery required, reduction in the extent of cabling required, and increased efficiency are shown to be major factors favoring application of the latter. Test results of small-scale machinery are matched by similar results of a large 16,000-hp electromagnetic installation. Performance test results and prime mover coupling test results are included. Some application problems are finally highlighted.
