The operation of an inert gas plant is split into two main sections: processing plant and distribution system. The processing plant is designed to supply either inert gas at a controlled pressure, or fresh air, to the distribution system. The complete operating cycle for the distribution system is: 1) inerting before loading, 2) loading cargo or ballasting, 3) load or ballasted passage, 4) discharging cargo or ballast, 5) tank washing and 6) fresh air purging. Details are provided on the operation of the system. Maintenance requirements are presented and includes a schedule for routine maintenance.
