THE INERT GAS SYSTEM - A BLANKET OF SAFETY FOR CRUDE CARRIERS

The prime function of an inert gas system installed in a tanker, or any other type of vessel, is the prevention of a buildup of a flammable mixture of air and hydrocarbon gas in the cargo tanks by the closely controlled introduction of inert gas. Certain critical periods, which occur during a tanker voyage, when the risk of explosion is greatly increased are discussed. A typical layout for an inert gas system is provided along with a discussion on the control system and training required. For the smaller tanker, an inert gas system based on nitrogen is described. Also included is a description of an inert gas system designed to eliminate soot carry-over.
