A PRACTICAL METHOD OF SECOND ORDER ANALYSIS: PART I - PIN JOINTED SYSTEMS
This practical but accurate method (suitable for design office are) is limited to building structures of structural steel but is applicable to all elastic materials and to materials whose inelasticity is a straightforward function of load on time. A system of notation has been developed as part of the method and is summarized in an appendix. The measure of the absolute structural stiffness is defined in units of force and is used as the central idea in tire analysis. A simple pin jointed structure is analyzed and the special case is considered of structures which have sidesway under gravity loads only. A numerical example of a pin jointed system is described, and the general design procedure for single story pin jointed structures is detailed. The method described here gives exact results within the limitations of small deflection theory.
