COMPACTION OF SAND IN THICK LIFTS

Where high densities are required, fills and pavement materials are usually placed and compacted in layers of 200 to 300 mm. Layer thicknesses rarely exceed 450 mm. In those cases, however, where uncompacted material is already in place to larger depths or where fill is placed in deep lifts via a dredging discharge pipeline, the rehandling costs involved in thin layer compaction may be prohibitive. The paper describes the use of a 180 tonne pneumatic-tyred roller and a 15 tonne vibratory roller to produce high densities in sand to a depth of 1500 mm. Difficulties involved in determining degrees of densification at depth and in control of the work generally, are discussed. Results of densities achieved by controlled dredging and by the various subsequent rolling operations are presented; despite high initial fill densities, surface settlements in excess of 100 mm were produced by rolling.
