MARINE COATINGS AND CATHODIC PROTECTION

Marine coatings and cathode protection systems are constantly being improved. Manufacturers of marine coatings have explored techniques for extending the life of antifouling coatings by in-water maintenance, stretching the period between drydocking. A number of methods for applying paint underwater have been developed including an airless spraying device and a pressure-feed paint roller. Hull coatings for ice-going vessels are also being developed. These coatings must be as hard as the ice that abrades them in addition to having the necessary qualities of resilience to cope with constant impact. Cathodic protection plays a leading role in the defense of ship's hulls against corrosion. The two types of cathodic protection systems discussed in this article are sacrificial anodes and impressed current.
