THE OPERATION OF LARGE SHIPS -- THE COMMERCIAL SIDE
The papers presented at a three day joint Royal Institute of Naval Architects/Nautical Institute sysmposium are discussed. The responsibilities of a general manager in shipping are summarized. The practicabilities of computers in shipping are outlined. A major port's ability to respond to the growing demand for bulk services is described. Examples are given showing the need for regular checks on navigational accuracy by the deck officers on board. The value of simulators in providing experience to seamen and in acting as investigators in solving specific problems is applauded.
