INFLUENCE OF THE PRODUCTION ACCURACY OF HULL COMPONENTS ON THE MANHOURS EXPENDED AND STANDARD ACHIEVED IN THE ASSEMBLY OF HULL SUBASSEMBLIES AND SECTIONS
The Authors discuss, with particular reference to shipbuilding in the USSR, the influence of the production accuracy of hull components upon the man-hours and standard achieved in the subsequent assembly processes, and consider how this accuracy can be improved. An introduction to the article includes a list of the percentage manhours expended, in Soviet yards, in the various operations required to produce a hull-section, and mentions that 20 to 22% of the total man-hours required in the production of these sections is attributed to component inaccuracies. Production procedures and solution to associated problems concerning accuracy are examined under the headings: Production Accuracy of Components, and Relevant Requirements; Panel Production; Assembly of Flat Plating to the Structure; Assembly of Curved Sections in Jigs. Quantitative information is included under each heading. The Authors' recommendations for improving the production accuracy of hull components include: the use of analytic methods for fairing ships' lines, with computer assistance for the calculations; the use of plasma cutting, in order to reduce the amount of heat applied; the use of program-controlled flame-cutting machines; and periodic checking and adjustment of the flame-cutting machines. Suggestions for decreasing the amount of fitting work needed for rectification include: making allowance for welding deformation, when setting up jigs and other equipment; techniques for preventing welding deformations; and regular checking of assembling and jig arrangements.
