TRANSWAY'S ARTUBAR AND BARGE TRAIN'S FLEXOR HINGE TUG TO BARGE STERN

The Artubar is an articulated tug-barge system designed for full-ocean operation, as well as for coastline and protected waters. The Artubar design embodies a barge with normal proportions, a full ship's bow, vertical wing-wall skegs, and a deep notch at the stern. The tug has massive steel pins, one at each port and starboard, that protrude in a transverse direction from the sides of the bow at a level slightly above the main deck. The pins engage matching sockets in the sides of the barge notch. They are free to rotate in the sockets, allowing the tug to pitch in relation to the barge. A unique concept has been developed for connecting sea-going barges in a train configuration that allows the individual barges to move with the motion of the sea without imposing undue forces on the hull structure of the interconnected barge. The coupling device, named Flexor, is retractable rods or pins that extend from the bow of the tug (or barge) and slide into tubes in the stern of the barge. The Flexor pins extend forward rather than to the side, are flexible and permit a certain degree of relative motion in all modes.
