INGRAM'S RIGID CONNECTING SYSTEM USED IN LARGEST TUG-BARGE COMBINATION

This article describes the development of a large integrated tug-barge unit for transportation of petroleum products and certified for unrestricted ocean operation. The barge is constructed with a large notch in the stern, which accommodates the forward two-thirds of the tug with a minimum of clearance. By using a totally rigid connection, consisting of a 1500-ton hydraulic ram on the bow of the tug which locks to a structure on the barge, all relative motion between the vessels is eliminated. This enables the tug to remain in the notch in all sea conditions. The vessels can be connected in two minutes, and disconnected somewhat faster. Barge-tug combinations built to this design are discribed including the Presque Isle, the largest tug-barge combination in the world.
