LONGITUDINAL CONTROL OF DUAL-MODE VEHICLES: AN OVERVIEW
This overview which includes a representative listing of reported efforts in this field, encompasses a discussion of control concepts and approaches applicable to other classes of individual automated ground transport. Relevant information on the modeling of vehicle dynamics is also included. Three categories of control are discussed: steady-state, constant-speed control with respect to some type of reference; organization between traffic stream interaction points; merging, existing, or station operations or all of these. Two general approaches toward achieving control in the categories have been advocated: synchronous control; and the asynchronous approach, the following are essential: either explicity account for the nonlinearities that are invariably present or in some manner "cancel" their effects; evaluate the effects of large paramter variations in the selected model; be aware of, and properly account for acceleration capabilities of a vehicle and how these change with speed. The need is indicated for the development of a suitably economical and reliable reference system for providing vehicle controllers with high-quality rate control information.
