Many foundation dynamics and soil-structure interaction problems require in-situ values of shear wave velocities and elastic moduli, or both, for foundation materials. The project engineer has at his disposal several methods for determining these properties in situ. Each of the methods has a particular attribute, but the crosshole survey when conducted properly, lends itself best to signal enhancement techniques and appears most versatile. Development of a nondestructive vertically polarized repeatable shear wave source is presented. Techniques of data acquisition using signal enhancement are considered. Comparison with shear wave velocity data obtained by other methods leads to the conclusion that a vertically polarized shear wave train can be generated and positively identified due to almost total absence of P-wave components. The method for crosshole seismic testing presented will largely free the project engineer from misinterpretation of shear wave velocity data. /ASCE/
