HYDRAULIC PLATFORM WALKS IN WATER TO PLACE OUTFALL PIPELINE
Spider II (400-ton, 8 legged walking platform) and Horse (4- legged, 36 ft. long, 12 ft. wide with 12-in. pipe legs and crossbracing, handled by a barge crane and controlled hydraulically by a console deck, and a quartet of cranes have placed more than a mile and a half of outfall pipe in the Pacific Ocean at Santa Barbara. The task involved the placement of 8,726 ft. of 48 in.-dia. concrete pipe made in 24 ft. bell- and-spigot sections. The 12-ton sections have a 5 1/2-in. wall thickness. The schedule called for beginning pipe laying 1,800 ft. from shore and, using the crane and barge combination, going seaward 6,926 ft. The first 2,000 ft. out is buried and ballasted. The rest lies directly on the ocean floor. To walk, Spider II leapfrogs; it can take 13-ft. steps fore or aft, using a double acting ram; it can go 3 ft. to each side, as well as traverse sea floor slopes to 15 deg. and work in 46 ft. of water.
