USES OF LOW-COST CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS OUTLINED
Wastes and some natural material are being investigated as potential low-cost construction materials. Studies have found that with proper placement and compaction, fly ash is well suited as an adequate structural fill. It is considered a pozzolanic material and addition of small amounts of lime or cement and water can result in rapid and significant strength development. Studies have found that sulfur may be used in the preparation of sulfur-asphalt emulsion binder, and as direct substitution for asphalt in simple blends of the materials in a pug mill. Sulfur could also be used in recycling old pavements, the use has been investigated of waste rubber from discarded tires as inert filler in portland cement concrete (PCC). The use of tunnel boring muck in PCC, bamboo and date palm midribs as reinforcing rods, rice husks bonded with portland cement, and the use of wastes such as incinerator ash, crushed glass, scrap steel, scrap polymer fibers, lignite fly ash, blast-furnace slag, shell and coral have also been investigated.
