DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS FOR PREDICTING WEEKEND RECREATIONAL TRAFFIC
This effort to develop prediction techniques for weekend recreational travel applicable to corridors at the fringes of urban areas and to highway networks in the vicinity of selected recreational complexes, produced the following: a narrative report describing a Recreational Travel Prediction Model (RTPM); a users manual for use of the computer-based program; model data and computer program. This report describes previous research and discusses the findings and conclusions. The TRPM which documents the recreational demand-supply interactions that generate weekend recreational traffic, provides a high degree of flexibility in terms of user-specified inputs and outputs. RTPM can provide traffic estimates on any highway link within an area and provides traffic estimates by numbers of vehicles. Three major sets of data are required to describe recreational demand, recreational resource supply, and transportation supply. The RTPM has been demonstrated on a IBM 360/5 computer. This study provided valuable insights in 4 areas: general recreational travel patterns on summer weekends; traffic demands near urban areas; traffic demands near recreational areas; and implications for the rural highway systems.
