THERMALLY - CONTROLLED FANS FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

The article describes two different types of thermally-controlled fans for commercial vehicles. They are called the positive clutch and viscous types, and the relative merits of each type of fan are explained together with the different operating characteristics. The positive clutch fan saves about ten to eleven per cent in the course of normal distribution haulage work and the viscous fans seven to eight per cent under normal working conditions. The cost of installation is approximately one fifth of the total saving cost benefit per vehicle per year. In addition to saving fuel, fan noise can be reduced and the overall noise level of the vehicle can be cut by as much as 3db (A). Further benefits are obtained by improving heater performance thus keeping the interior of the vehicle warm at all times. Engine wear is also reduced. The fans are reliable and are fitted to many continental vehicles; most of the fans are approved by British manufacturers. /TRRL/
