Tests to measure the noise radiated from a vehicle wheel were conducted in a laboratory at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) and were verified in road trails in which a 2 inch bruel and kjaer microphone was placed 0.5 m from the front left wheel of the vehicle. The laboratory tests were carried out with a normal working load applied to a rear wheel running on a 1.2 m diameter dynamometer wheel on which had been constructed a number of different road surfaces. An 11 kw DC motor drove the dynamometer wheels and the rear transmission of the vehicle had been removed so that only road noise remained. The laboratory used was a semi-reverberant space and a calibrated noise source was used in order to measure the sound power level. The following series of tyres and road surfaces were used: tyres (all cross-ply and ribbed) (1) worn smooth, (2) new retread, (3) 50 percent worn retread; road surfaces: (1) smooth, (2) 6-11 mm stone chip, (3) 10-16 mm stone chip. The effects of tyre wear on noise are reported, together with the variation of road noise level with speed. As part of a separate series of tests the effect on road surface water lying on a smooth road was measured. The l10 noise level increased with road wetness but the values of the l50 and l90 were also dependent on how hard it was raining at the time which gave rise to considerable variation in the traffic noise index. /TRRL/
