A VIBRATING WIRE SOIL PRESSURE GAUGE

A vibrating-wire soil pressure gauge of the diaphragm type intended for use at structural boundaries, is described. The features of the gauges associated with the vibrating wire are based on those developed for strain gauges over the last two decades by the author at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, United Kingdom, and used successfully in many structural applications. The diaphragm thickness is chosen to suit the pressures to be measured and the soil stiffness. The likely behaviour in soils is discussed in the light of previous research work. Its manufacture and use on site are described and an alternative design for the wholly buried application is put forward.(a) /TRRL/
