AXIAL SHORTENING IN REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS

Details are given of two methods for calculating the time-dependent axial shortening in reinforced concrete compression members. The first method is suitable for hand calculation, being based on a rate-of-creep analysis; the second is derived from a superposition analysis and is suitable for computer programming. In order to minimise the quantity of data usually needed to define the specific creep surface, or the creep function, a procedure of transformation and linearisation is introduced. This allows either component to be constructed from only two pieces of data which represent the final creep in young and aged concrete, respectively.(a) /TRRL/
