CONCRETE BREAKING - METHODS FOR REDUCING NOISE AND VIBRATION
This paper outlines new legislation concerning noise from construction and demolition works and describes methods by which noise can be reduced. Sound levels produced by various types of plant are tabulated. Recent work at BRE has shown that it may be possible to reduce noise from a 36 kg pneumatic breaker to a peak reading of 82 dbNa) at a distance of 7 M. Thermic boring is a quiet and vibration free method of cutting reinforced concrete or substantial brick structures. Structural-borne noise from diamond tools can be up to 25 db(a) less than that produced by percussive tools. Hydraulic bursters or jacks can be used for secondary breaking of concrete, substantial brick structures or foundations. A concrete breaking attachment for 360 degree hydraulic excavator known as the nibbler is illustrated. The nibbler snaps concrete of up to 375 mm thickness by a bending movement. Its production rate of 100 m2/h makes it suitable for breaking concrete roadways. /TRRL/
