ELIMINATION OF SKID HAZARD ON THE CEMENT CONCRETE SURFACE OF COLEROON BRIDGE DECK - A CASE STUDY

The article describes the effectiveness of a number of treatments to restore the skid resistance of a concrete bridge deck. Measurements were made with the portable skid tester as recommended in Road Note 27. Unsuccessful methods tried include acid treatment, coating with a slurry-seal and a sand bitumen mix. Measurements showed that transverse rectangular grooves 6 mm wide and 3 mm deep cut at 20 cm centres produced a lasting improvement in skid resistance. Details are given of a mastic asphalt surface treatment which also proved successful in increasing long term skid resistance. Tables included show that the greatest improvement in measured skid resistance over five years was given by grooving the surface. The article briefly describes similar treatment of surfaces elsewhere in India where loss of skidding resistance has been a major cause of accidents. /TRRL/
