MONITORING THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE BOX SECTION OF EXTERNALLY POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE BRIDGES

TRL have undertaken a major project for the Highways Agency to investigate all aspects of the design and construction of post-tensioned concrete bridges with externally unbonded tendons. This included the design, construction and testing of a quarter scale model of an externally post-tensioned bridge and an investigation of the corrosivity of the environment inside the concrete box section in which tendons are housed. A knowledge of the environment inside the box section is required to help determine the level of protection required to prevent corrosion. To provide this information, stressed steel samples and steel coupons were placed inside the box sections of two bridges: Botley Flyover in Oxfordshire and River Camel Viaduct near Wadebridge in Cornwall. In addition temperatures and relative humidities both inside and outside the box sections are being monitored. Monitoring started at the end of 1995 and this paper describes the findings during the first three years exposure. For the covering abstract see ITRD E106406.
