THE CORROSCOPE SYSTEM FOR THE DIAGNOSIS, DETECTION AND REPAIR OF REINFORCEMENT CORROSION IN CONCRETE
During the last decade a number of tests have been developed to investigate various aspects of the corrosion of steel in concrete. The general purpose of these tests is to recommend the extent, type and priority for remedial action. Each test delivers specific information and it is essential to carry out a range of tests providing different sorts of information if a complete appraisal of the corrosion process, sufficient to recommend remedial action, is to be achieved. There is a conceptual problem concerning the interpretation of these tests because they are mainly based on electrochemical techniques, reflecting the mechanism of the corrosion process. The units of measurement often involve amps, volts and ohms, hence it is not surprising that civil engineers sometimes find it difficult to interpret the results of these tests in engineering terms. This paper describes a recently developed software package called CORROSCOPE which enables the results of corrosion tests on concrete structures to be interpreted in engineering terms, enabling the remedial action to be correctly specified.
