PROGRAMMED REPLICATION OF IN SITU (WHOLE-BODY) LOADING CONDITIONS DURING IN VITRO (SUBSTRUCTURE) TESTING OF A VERTEBRAL COLUMN SEGMENT
An experimental technique has been developed to simulate dynamic whole-body loading of a spinal segment in a testing machine. During whole-body caudocephalad acceleration of a cadaveric subject, an intervertebral load cell (IVLC) was used to measure the load sustained by a vertebral body. The excised segment containing the IVLC was then placed in an MTS testing machine which was commanded to load the segment so that the IVLC output matched the pre-recorded whole body IVLC signal. The purpose of the experiment was to determine the load bearing role of the articular facets and to monitor extensively the strain distribution on the surface of the vartebra. There was conclusive evidence that the facets were capable of transmitting both tensile and compressive loads.
