THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WELD DISCONTINUITIES - A REVIEW OF CURRENT LITERATURE
In this survey the main emphasis is directed toward ferritic materials. Sections covering aluminum and austenitic stainless steels and nickel base alloys are presented. The introductory portions cover the need for timely assessment of the significance of weld discontinuities, the nature of weld discontinuities and the terminology associated with the field. Following this is an assessment of discontinuities in relation to the possible service failure modes. The report culminates with the current philosophy evolving around the significance of weld discontinuities in regard to a fitness for purpose or service and whether the state of the art will permit rational incorporation into the codes governing weld fabrication at this time.
