INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS OF SHIP PERFORMANCE IN ICE

The discovery of the importance of mechanical friction is discussed in relation to a ship's performance in ice. The effectiveness of bow propellors, as fitted to the larger Baltic icebreakers, has been found to be due to a large extent to the flow of water created round the forebody of the vessel, this flow acting as a lubricant for the ice/hull interface. The Wartsila air bubble system, which works on a similar principle is described.
