THE SMART CARD REVOLUTION

This article discusses the growing popularity in smart cards. It describes their advantages in that they can be read remotely and can store up to 30 times more data than stored-value magnetic stripe cards. The TransLink project in the San Francisco Bay Area, which features a smart card that is valid on all of the region's bus rail and ferry systems, is discussed. The article also gives a brief overview of smart card applications in London, Paris, Rome, Berlin Groningen, and Hong Kong.
