NO-HASSLES HEAVY HAUL
Export coal is vital to the economy of South Africa. Some 66 million tons are transported annually by Spoornet, the government owned standard railroad on 1.5 mile long unit trains. Until recently, operational efficiency and capacity improvements have not been possible because of the physical limitations of conventional pneumatic breaking. The article discusses the company's decision, in 1999, to try a combination of ECP (electronically controlled pneumatic) braking and DP (distributed power), a combination that had not been tested before. Operational improvements achieved are described.
