MASSIVE PARKING GARAGE TUCKED INTO DETROIT AIRFIELD
A $125-million parking garage under construction at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is the largest such structure ever built in a single phase. The site limitations required the design team to build three parking levels over a four-lane terminal access roadway to provide enough parking for 11,600 vehicles. The target was 12,000 spaces. A modified design/build approach is saving the airport more than $15 million in construction costs. The construction team chose a precast concrete building system and is delivering the project 2 months ahead of schedule. The advantages of precast concrete include speed of construction, less susceptibility to inclement weather during construction, and better quality control.
