CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEMS. THE OPINIONS OF 1575 PARENTS CONCERNING THE OBTAINING AND INSTALLATION OF CHILD CAR SEATS

SKYDDSSYSTEM FOR BARN I BILAR. 1575 FORALDRARS SYN PA ANSKAFFNING OCH MONTERING AV BILBARNSTOLAR

A questionnaire having to do with the obtaining and installation of child seats was distributed, in the spring of 1976, to all parents having children under five years of age attending day nurseries in the town of Linkoping, Sweden, a medium-size town of approximately 100,000 inhabitants. The questionnaire was completed and returned by 1,575 families, a response rate of 83%. Nearly all of the parents (88%) owned a car and as many as 80% used car child seats (or had been using them until the child had grown too big for the seat). Of this group, 72% had rearward-facing seats and 96% of these were installed in the front seat. These figures shown an increase in the use of seats as compared to a similar but smaller study carried out in 1973 in which only 57% of the sample used or had used seats and 65% of this group has rearward-facing seats. The dangerous hook-over seat had nearly completely disappeared from use in the latest study and the forward-facing seats used were mainly of a safer variety. As regards installation of the seat, approximately two-thirds of the parents had installed the seat themselves; in the Volvo, 90%. None of the parents reported any accidents in which the child had been injured. /Author/
