THE POTENTIAL USE OF EXPANSIVE CEMENT-CONCRETE IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
The types, actions and uses of expansive cements are briefly outlined. Reference is made to overseas highway engineering projects on which expansive cement-concretes have been used. Studies on concrete containing an expansive agent, which is available in Australia are presented. Phenomena investigated include the development and loss of stress under different restraints, the measurement of shrinkage, creep and bond strength and an examination of the influence of eccentric restraint on deflection. Design criteria, which for expansive cement-concrete are different from those of ordinary Porland cement-concrete, are discussed briefly. The types of highway structures in which expansive cement- concrete could be advantageously used under Australian conditions are also indicated. /Author/
