THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A FINE GRAINED BITUMINOUS MIX TO MAINTAIN HIGH FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE UNDER ADVERSE CONDITIONS
The use of finer gradings of a polish prone aggregate to upgrade the frictional characteristics of plant mix pavement surfacing materials was outlined by Ross in the ARRB Proceedings 1970. This paper is an extension of this concept utilising fine grained crusher run material with a tar pitch/bitumen blend as a binder, the tar pitch being introduced into the binder to produce mildly sacrificial properties in the mix under traffic abrasion. The design and the development of this type of material is outlined and an evaluation of its field performance at two sites on curves with differing traffic volumes is made by texture depth and polishing measurements. /Author/
