RENDEZVOUS AT FOLKESTONE
This paper discusses the design and construction of the Folkestone interceptor tunnels of the Dover and Folkestone Wastewater Scheme in South East England; it includes a tunnel map. The Folkestone Interceptor Tunnels contract is one of the scheme's ten contracts, and involves the construction of over 2km of tunnels, with diameters between 1.35m and 3.66m internal diameter. Currently, waste water from Folkestone is discharged directly into the sea. On completion of the project, waste water from Folkestone and Dover will be transported to a new waste water treatment works and then discharged at Dover. The basic concept was that the interceptor tunnels would provide the underground space for the pumping station facilities, and that the pumping station contract would provide everything else required. The paper first summarises some design aspects, with special attention given to how the construction stage influences permanent design. It then describes the construction of: (1) the hand drives, namely the inlet and overflow tunnels and the Shaft 1 to Shaft 5 tunnel; (2) the Warren Road Pipejack tunnel; and (3) the two tunnel boring machine (TBM) drives, in the interceptor and Stade tunnels, using separate earth pressure balance TBMs for each drive. Finally, surface settlement monitoring is discussed.
