These recommendations for prestressed concrete columns and bearing walls are written concisely, similar to a code presentation. Consequently, in the main body of the recommendations, background details, suggestions for carrying out the requirements, or amplification of intent are not included. This function is fulfilled by a commentary which is given at the end of each chapter. There are 15 chapters in this Recommended Practice including a notation summary and a list of selected references. The topics in the chapters cover (1) Definitions; (2) Scope; (3) General Considerations; (4) Basic Assumptions; (5) Limiting Dimensions; (6) Effective Width of Load-Bearing Walls; (7) Slenderness Effects; (8) Approximate Evaluation of Slenderness Effects; (9) Permissible Stresses in Concrete; (10) Bearing Stresses: (11) Shear; (12) Design of Columns; (13) Design of Thin Walls; (14) Design of Ribbed Walls; and (15) Reinforcing of Prestressed Concrete Walls. The commentary discusses some of the Committee considerations in developing these recommendations and elaborates on those provisions which are new or revised relative to the 1971 ACI Building Code. References to research data supporting the recommendations are cited for the user desiring to study individual questions in greater detail. Other documents that provide suggestions or help in using these recommendations are included in the list of references.
