THE CITY OF CHARLOTTE IMPLEMENTS AN INNOVATIVE ON-STREET PARKING PROGRAM
Twenty years after removing on street parking from the center city, Charlotte is returning to that concept, following a national trend of encouraging new growth and revitalization in its center city, "Uptown" as it is called locally. The article describes the process the city followed to select a program to fit the local needs. After months of planning, the program's pilot phase kicked off in May 1997. Originally over 500 daytime parking spaces were made available, with expectation to expand that number to 2,000 by the fall of 1997.
