CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOOSAC TUNNEL, 1855 TO 1876
This historical review of the science of hydraulics discusses the rise of fluid mechanics and comments on the war years and their aftermath. The influence of persons such as W.F. Durand, Morrough O'Brien, and Wilhelm Spannhake (1881-1959) are noted. The contribution of Boris Alexandrovitch Bakhmetef (1880-1951) and his 2-part "Mechanics of Fluids Compendium" are discussed. The work of von Karman, Robert Knapp, A.T. Ippen, Felix Nemeny, Hunter Rouse and others are also discussed. Mention is made of the Fifth International Congress of Applied Mechanics (1938), the first one of the series in the U.S.
